
Eddy’s work foresaw current uses of prayer and meditation for health.” Her highly original metaphysics (which critics too simplistically accuse her of lifting from the influential mental healer Phineas Quimby) touched nearly every thinker in the mind-power world for fifty years. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Eddy became widely read and internationally known. “Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy (1875, multiple updates and editions) - This is not a positive-thinking book in any conventional sense, but none of the literature mentioned here would have been possible, or at least would read the same way, without the Christian Science founder’s influence.

Science and Health is also central, with the Bible, to the faith embraced by the worldwide Church of Christ, Scientist. This book transcends denomination, and I never hesitate to share it with anyone looking for practical spiritual answers to problems they face or simply seeking a deeper understanding of God. Readers of various faith traditions study and use the ideas in Science and Health. The Women’s National Book Association has identified it as one of “75 books by women whose words have changed the world.” Available now in 17 languages, it has sold over 10 million copies. Science and Health has remained in continuous publication since 1875. Science and Health is the book she wrote to fully explain Christian Science she dedicated it to all “honest seekers for Truth.” According to Eddy, these divine laws govern the universe, including man, and through prayer we can become conscious of their immediacy and ability to answer any human need.Ī devoted student of the Bible, Eddy was convinced that she had discovered the spiritual foundation of Jesus’ healing work, thus confirming his promise that such healing would be and is possible for others to rely on and practice.

The term Christian Science is used to refer to the changeless laws of God, good, and their application to healing. In this profound moment of revelation, she discovered what she would later call “Christian Science.” Nine years earlier, in critical condition after a severe fall, she experienced an instantaneous recovery from her injuries while reading an account of Jesus’ healing. Science and Health was first published by Mary Baker Eddy in 1875.

So I’d like to share a little about this book and why I find it to be an essential resource in living one’s spirituality. But Science and Health may be less familiar to you. And their ideas form the basis of my healing practice.Įveryone has heard of the Bible, of course.

They comfort, guide, and inspire me, as they do so many others. I love to study these writings, and I learn something new from them every day. As you may have noticed, I often refer to two books: the Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
